Fauquier Health Deploys New Robotic Technology for Knee Replacement
June 02, 2026
Fauquier Health has incorporated the VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solution into its orthopedic surgery program. The technology helps surgeons perform knee replacement surgery with data that’s tailored to each patient’s unique anatomy.
“This technology allows for precise incisions to optimize the patient’s range of motion after surgery. I can adjust the implants by fractions of a millimeter and degree to match the patient’s anatomy” said Scott Koenig, MD, orthopedic surgeon. “Ultimately, it will allow patients to walk more naturally with a stable and flexible knee.”
The VELYS system uses an infrared camera and optical trackers to help the surgeon gather data about the patient’s knee anatomy, providing important details and data which assists the surgeon in finding the optimal implant position. Having a knee replacement that is personalized to their unique anatomy can help patients get back to normal activities sooner.
Fauquier Health’s Orthopedic Surgery program has been recognized by the Joint Commission as a Center of Excellence and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield has designated the hospital as a Blue Distinction Center+ for knee and hip replacement surgery. This designation is for hospitals that have demonstrated expertise in the delivery of quality specialty care and uses quality, safety and cost of care criteria, further recognizing facilities that offer more affordable care.
“The robot is easy for us to work with and there is no need for additional CT scan imaging ahead of time, avoiding unnecessary radiation exposure and medical expense for the patient” said Dr. Koenig.
Dr. Koenig and fellow orthopedic surgeon James Ward, MD are both trained on the VELYS system, and members of the Fauquier Health OR team have also received in-depth training. “Fauquier Health is committed to providing the best possible outcomes for our patients” said Rebecca Segal, FACHE, CEO, Fauquier Health. “We have brought the VELYS solution to our orthopedic surgery program because it helps our patients have a better knee replacement experience. We are proud to bring advanced, proven technology to our community and beyond.”
