General Surgery at a Top General Hospital

July 28, 2025

What does being a Top General Hospital mean?  Dr. Mazur explains that while the quality of the care is excellent, there is more to it. “As a community hospital, we offer many benefits to our patients,” says Dr. Mazur “I get to spend more time with my patients and get to know them as a person, while at the same time, they can access care more quickly here and stay closer to home, which can make things much easier for them and their families.” Fauquier Health has been named a Top General Hospital - the only one in Virginia and one of only 36 in the nation - by the Leapfrog Group.

As a general surgeon at Fauquier Health, Dr. Mazur treats a wide variety of conditions, from gallbladder removal, hernia repair and colon surgery to breast surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Trained as a robotic surgeon, she utilizes technology to help her patients with less scarring, faster healing, and, often, less pain during recovery. “General Surgeons are able to help patients at critical points in their healthcare journey. We can help people with all kinds of different problems. We are here to talk about options, to offer evidence-based medical and surgical care. That is special.”

“At Fauquier Health, we have amenities and capabilities you might not find in other similar-sized hospitals. We not only have great technology like the DaVinci robot and all the laparoscopic equipment, we also have a surgical team, including surgeons, first-assists and OR staff that is specially trained and offers a much deeper level of expertise.”

It’s also a culture that lends itself to deeper relationships among providers. “We get to know all the providers in an environment that encourages interaction. For example, I can reach out directly to radiology or pathology directly, which means more expeditious care. As a surgeon, I feel very supported here and confident in the quality of care we are all committed to providing our patients.”

Dr. Mazur moved to the Harrisonburg area as a child and went on to earn a BS in chemistry from the University of Virginia. She moved to Mississippi to attend medical school and then completed her residency at Brookwood Baptist Health in Birmingham Alabama. She moved back to Virginia to be closer to family.

“Practicing surgery in my own community has always been my goal. I love that I have a broad skill set that I can use to help my neighbors. Being part of Warrenton, and Fauquier County, is special. There is a great sense of community here, with a vibrant lifestyle that includes so many engagement opportunities like First Fridays, Juneteenth and Old Town Festival. As a family, we love trying out the restaurants, the parks and just enjoying Main Street.”
