Our History

On February 26, 1925, Fauquier County Hospital opened its doors at 32 Waterloo Street in Warrenton. The 20-bed hospital was in the old Garner House (known today as the John Marshall Building). The Garner House was purchased by the Fauquier County Hospital Association from Mrs. Frances Garner for $14,000.

The hospital closed briefly in 1940, and in 1941 it became the Physicians' Hospital. In 1954, the ten physician stockholders voted to sell the hospital and chose a local citizen group. It soon became apparent that the old Garner House needed to expand and that the current building was not a long-term solution for the growing healthcare needs of the community.

By late 1955, fundraising had started for a new hospital fund, with local business and civic leader Tom Frost opening the bank account for the fund with a $1,000 donation. The goal was to build a brand new, 50-bed hospital at a cost of $1 million. The community rallied around the cause and Warrenton resident Robert D. van Rojien donated a 17-acre tract of land that was part of his family's St. Leonard's farm. The land was on a hill just off Shirley Avenue, thus coining the phrase "Hospital Hill."
