Comprehensive Cancer Treatment in Northern Virginia

The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas is the first free-standing facility in the area dedicated solely to comprehensive cancer treatment and wellness services. The Cancer Center offers patients the most advanced radiation treatment available – the linear accelerator with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). IMRT delivers a greater dose of radiation to tumors while protecting surrounding tissue, lowering the likelihood of side effects.

The Lake Manassas Cancer Center's Leadership
The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas team is led by Sanjeev K. Aggarwal, MD, a board-certified radiation oncologist and one of the area’s most skilled and respected cancer specialists. After earning a medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Aggarwal interned at Carilion Hospital System in Roanoke, Virginia, and completed residencies in radiation oncology at the University of Louisville, Kentucky and University of Maryland. He is also an Assistant Professor at the Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
New Technology at The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas The Cancer Center at Lake Manassas is now providing faster and more accurate radiation treatment with RapidArc — the latest in cancer treatment technology. The Cancer Center is the first treatment center in the Northern Virginia/Washington, D.C., area to offer this new technology. RapidArc can be used to treat many kinds of cancer, but is especially useful in treating prostate, rectal and head and neck cancers.

Shorter, More Accurate Treatments
Compared with other treatments, RapidArc is much quicker. “Patients can be treated in three to five minutes, versus 15 to 20 minutes with other methods, including tomotherapy,” explains Sanjeev Aggarwal, M.D., medical director at the Cancer Center at Lake Manassas.

Since patients are less likely to move during these short treatments, accuracy is improved and there is less risk for damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. “This technology allows us to more closely focus on the tumor while blocking out critical areas and important organs, so in some cases, patients can receive a lower dose of radiation,” adds Dr. Aggarwal.

A Better Overall Experience
RapidArc also can help improve the overall experience for the patient. “Going through treatments and the anxiety of holding still for an extended period can be stressful,” notes Dr. Aggarwal. Most patients would probably agree that less time in the machine and quicker treatments would make for a more pleasant, less stressful experience.
