Cardiac Rehabilitation

Recovering from a significant heart event can be overwhelming and frightening. The Cardiac Rehabilitation department at the Wellness Center can help you with your recovery. Participating in Cardiac Rehab is beneficial for your long term health and is the best way to get you back on your feet. Knowing what is safe, how hard to push and what to avoid can be barriers to recovery.

Fauquier Health's Cardiac Rehabilitation Program recieved certification by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVP) in August 2018.

Supervised Exercise Training (SET) for Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Attempting to complete daily activities or take a walk can become increasingly difficult because patients will often experience cramps in the legs, buttocks, thighs or calves. Plaque build up in blood vessels is common in those with diagnosed coronary artery disease. Undiagnosed PAD is common in other conditions such as:

  • Heart attack
  • Heart disease
  • Stroke
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking history

This medically-supervised program incorporates exercise physiologists, registered nurses, respiratory therapists in a comprehensive education program to improve your quality of life. Ultimately, the end goal is to help improve blood flow circulation and make activities easier through a combination of walking and resting.

Exercise sessions are individually tailored at the start of the program and can change based on a patient's progression. During each session, patients are monitored by their heart rate, claudication, blood pressure and exercise intensity.

Classes and Counseling

Ongoing support for cardiac patients and their family members is vitally important. We offer individual group education classes for you and your family on topics like the benefits of exercise, medication compliance, nutrition, risk factor modification, and emotional health and depression. If needed, one-on-one appointments can be made with our dietician to help guide you to meet your dietary needs and restrictions. Understanding heart disease is vital to managing and achieving your optimal level of health and sense of wellness.

Working With Your Doctor

Your referring physician is given a progress report at the completion of your program. We can also send a report with you to any appointment you have during the program. A physician referral is required with a qualifying ankle-brachial index which is the ratio of systolic blood pressure measure in the ankle and brachial arteries. Insurance plans typically cover 36 sessions in a strict 12-week timeframe.
