Our licensed physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists provide comprehensive rehabilitation services to help people enjoy a lifetime at their maximum functional level. Adult outpatient services are provided at the Medical Office Building, which is conveniently located on our hospital campus (253 Veterans Drive, Suite 210, Warrenton, Virginia). Adult physical therapy is also available at the Fauquier Health Wellness Center (419 Holiday Court, Suite 200, Warrenton, Virginia.)
Our licensed professionals provide a variety of recovery and rehabilitation services across the health system, for inpatients and outpatients of all ages. After medical procedures that require rehabilitation, our therapists help by: controlling pain and swelling, beginning the recovery process, assessing patient needs, and beginning the manual techniques and exercises that help achieve mobility goals.
Often individuals can benefit from assistance from two or even all three types of therapists. When this happens, a unified treatment plan is developed by the therapy team.
Functional Dry Needling is a treatment technique used to treat myofascial pain -- pain that is associated with inflammation or irritation of muscle or fascia (connective tissue surrounding the muscle). A small monofilament needle is inserted into the muscle fibers, which typically contain a trigger point. The trigger point is a taut band of skeletal muscle, often tender to the touch, located within a larger muscle group.
There is no solution injected. Most people will not even feel the needle inserted through the skin, but once it is in the muscle, a couple of responses are possible. If the tissue is healthy, very little discomfort is typically reported. If the tissue is sensitive, shortened, or has a trigger point -- causing a neuromuscular dysfunction -- a muscle cramp sensation or a “muscle twitch” is often reported. The twitch response elicits a biochemical response that can deactivate the trigger point, decrease pain and restore the function of the muscle.
Functional dry needling is an effective treatment for acute and chronic pain management and sport-related injuries. Some conditions that may benefit include:
repetitive stress injuries
rotator cuff injuries
iliotibial band syndrome
