Surgery is the branch of medicine that encompasses preoperative preparation, intraoperative judgment and management and postoperative care of clients. The Fauquier surgical services suite consists of five fully functioning operating rooms with sophisticated diagnostic and imaging equipment. Specialty surgery includes cardiology, ENT, ophthalmology, general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology. Orthopedics includes spine, plastic surgery, podiatry, urology and vascular surgery. Our facility continues to attract more diverse specialties including retinal surgeons. Our surgeons very willingly share their knowledge with the entire surgical team. Together we incorporate the very latest advances in medical care with our core values of compassion and partnership.
The pre-admission testing staff initiates patient charts by completing a pre-anesthesia evaluation of incoming patients via telephone conversations; they also provide pre-operative education to the patients during this interview. Information such as laboratory values, radiology reports, electrocardiograms, consults and history and physical exams are obtained and shared with the Anesthesia Department for review.
In addition, Fauquier Health's pre-admission testing unit coordinates with the Physical Therapy department to conduct an informative, interactive class here at the hospital for those patients and primary caregivers anticipating total joint replacement.
The Surgical Services Preparation and Holding unit reviews all charts prior to the patient’s arrival to Fauquier Surgical Services. Patients are assessed, prepared for surgery and provided reassurance. Registered nurses exhibit leadership abilities by utilizing priority setting, decision making and problem solving skills. Interpersonal and communication skills within the department, facility and community are demonstrated.
The Operating Room arena consists of many members all working as a team: surgeons, registered nurses, first assists and surgical technicians alongside anesthesiologists, certified registered nurse anesthetists, nursing assistants and materials management personnel. They all incorporate the nursing process using assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the individual care given to our clients. The patient’s safety and welfare are entrusted to the operating room personnel from the moment of arrival in the perioperative suite until departure and transfer to another professional health care team member in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit.
Building on information obtained from the pre-admission testing and Prep and Hold units, the operating room nurses develop a plan of care during the intraoperative phase and carry out the plan with skill, safety, efficiency and effectiveness including interventions that assist the patient in a conscious or unconscious state.
In addition, operating room team members participate in patient and family teaching, create and maintain a sterile field, provide equipment and supplies based on patient needs, perform surgical counts, administer medications as prescribed, physiologically monitor the patient during the surgical procedure, monitor and control the environment and respect and maintain the patient’s rights and dignity at all times. Working in conjunction with the surgeon, team members insure that the very best care is given to the client entrusted to us during this often stressful time of life.
The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and Outpatient Recovery (OPR) are the final destinations for the surgical patient. Here the patient receives immediate post-anesthesia care until discharge home or admission to an inpatient unit. Pediatric, adult and geriatric populations receive highly skilled nursing care which includes constant monitoring of cardio-pulmonary function, level of consciousness, pain level, nausea and surgical site assessment.
