We welcome students in all clinical areas, including nursing, laboratory, surgical services, physical therapy, pharmacy and emergency medicine. Many of our students are already employees, but are working to augment their education. It is not unusual for a certified nursing assistant to return to school to become a nurse, or a therapy assistant to become a therapist. It is a testament to their dedication to the healthcare field.
Students come to us from various learning institutions, like Shenandoah University, Old Dominion University, Virginia Commonwealth University, Lord Fairfax Community College, Northern Virginia Community College, and many more. There are roughly 50 students on campus at any given time. They must meet our high standards to be accepted here and are held to the same code of patient care and confidentiality as all of our staff. And just like all of our staff, all students go through background and drug testing, as well as an orientation process to insure they are the right fit for us.
Students are always supervised while on our campus and patients always have the right to ask that students not be present during their care. Students can be identified by their school clinical uniforms and badges, except in the operating room (OR), where they, of course, wear scrubs. OR patients are asked before their surgery, while they are still alert, if they agree to have a student present.
One great way to have a top-notch clinical staff is to train them ourselves. We see the student program as an excellent way to foster the skills we know are important in the next generation of care providers. We hope you agree.
