Fauquier Health will offer a free, eight-session course on managing osteoporosis and osteopenia. It will be held from 6 to 7 p.m., Mondays and Thursdays, October 7 to 31, in Fauquier Hospital’s Medical Office Building on Veterans Drive. The class size will be limited to 12 students; both men and women are welcome. Registration is required at 540-316-2680.
This class is for those who have been diagnosed with osteoporosis and osteopenia, and will teach the basics for managing these conditions. The class will concentrate on posture correction, realignment, and exercises for strengthening and stretching. Those who call 540-316-2680 to register will be asked to fill out a questionnaire, either by phone or by mail, in order to make sure the class is appropriate for them.
Elena Dwyer, Fauquier Health physical therapist, said that walking is the single best exercise there is for warding off osteoporosis. "Anyone can do it, and walking can do a lot to strengthen the hips and spine."
Dwyer also recommends balance exercises and anything that strengthens the core muscles. But, she adds, "Avoid sit-ups, and any twisting exercises or moves that involve extreme bending. They put too much pressure on the spine."
Participants in the October class should dress comfortably in loose clothing, and should bring a yoga mat.
