An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves and a computer to create images of blood vessels, organs, soft-tissues, or unborn babies. These sound waves are transmitted to the body through a transducer. A warm gel is applied to the skin for better transmission and reception. The sound waves return as echoes and are recorded as images. Ultrasounds are commonly used in obstetric, breast and thyroid scans, and to diagnose diseases of the blood vessels or to determine causes for abdominal and pelvic pain.
Serving all of Northern Virginia, our ultrasound scans are just one portion of our state of the art imaging and radiology department. For more information, visit our main medical imaging page.
