Dr. Robert Smith has a passion for treating patients with injuries. In addition to providing general orthopedic services, he specializes in arthroscopic surgery for the shoulder and knee. He also recently completed a sports medicine fellowship program where he helped take care of injured athletes from the Baltimore Ravens football team and various college teams located throughout the region. As an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Smith understands the importance of getting our patients back to an active lifestyle. Whether he’s treating a young athlete with a sports injury, or a retiree who sustained a shoulder injury from a fall, Dr. Smith’s primary goal is to help our patients regain mobility to the point where they can resume their normal, everyday activities.

Education and Training
After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) in 2002, Dr. Smith completed the West Virginia University Internship and Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program. Following, he completed the Baltimore Union Memorial Hospital Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. Prior to medical school, Dr. Smith earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Princeton University, and a master’s degree in public health from George Washington University.

Honors and Awards
Among his many honors, Dr. Smith received the Virginia Commonwealth University Wright Academic Scholarship, and was inducted into the pathology honor society. He also served as Chief Resident at West Virginia University, and received the following awards: Teaching Resident of the Year, Outstanding Junior Resident, and Resident Award for Grand Rounds Excellence for both 2004 and 2005. During his fellowship program, he received an outstanding research award. Dr. Smith is currently a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Arthroscopy Association.

Research
Dr. Robert Smith has conducted numerous research studies on a variety of orthopedic topics. His findings were published in Foot and Ankle International, and were presented at meetings and symposiums for the Virginia Orthopaedic Society and Union Memorial Hospital, and at Grand Rounds lectures for West Virginia University.

Employment
Dr. Smith joined Fauquier Health as a private practice physician in 2008. Prior to medical school, Dr. Smith worked as a medical assistant, a clinical trials coordinator for the MCV Hospital bone marrow transplant department, and a volunteer teacher for the Healthy Heart program in Richmond public schools. During medical school, he was a research assistant for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at MCV.

Personal Interests
Dr. Robert Smith serves as the team physician for the Fauquier High School athletics program.
