
Dedication is one of the most important qualities in a physician. And when we think about dedicated physicians at Fauquier Health, Dr. von Elten certainly comes to mind. Not only because Dr. von Elten has devoted his entire career to Fauquier Health and the families in our local community, but because he’s also a respected leader, trusted advisor and reliable friend. Board certified in family medicine, Dr. von Elten takes a personal approach to health care. He knows that by taking the time to educate his patients, listening to their concerns and involving them in the decision-making process, he can empower them to become active participants in their own care.
Education and Training
After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1976, Dr. von Elten completed the Medical College of Virginia Internship Program and the Blackstone Family Practice Center Residency Program. Prior to medical school, he earned a bachelor’s degree in the honors biology program at the College of William and Mary.
Certifications and Proficiencies
Dr. von Elten is triple board certified in family medicine, emergency medicine and clinical lipidology. He also is a Certified Medical Review Officer. In addition, Dr. von Elten is certified in electrocardiography (ECG) by the American College of Cardiology, and carotid sonology by the American Society of Neuroimaging.
Honors and Awards
Among his many academic honors, Dr. von Elten was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society while attending the Medical College of Virginia.
Employment
Dr. von Elten has been in private practice at Fauquier Health with Piedmont Family Practice since 1979. For six of those years, he was the assistant director of our Emergency Services Department. Since 1988, he has been a member of the Fauquier Health System Board of Directors. He is also a former president of our Medical Staff, and a former chairman for the Department of Medicine, Credentials, and Pharmacy and Therapeutics committees.
Dr. von Elten has also served: on the Eli Lily Women’s Health Advisory Board; as a trustee for the Fauquier Hospital Foundation and the Highland School; as the president of Warrenton Overlook Association; as the medical officer for Oak Springs of Warrenton and the Warrenton Training Center; and as the president of Piedmont Primary Care. He currently serves on the BB&T Advisory Board.
Personal Interests
Dr. von Elten is married and has two children.
