One of the most important qualities for a pediatrician is the ability to listen. Dr. Jakum understands that a parent is a child’s best advocate, and he appreciates the quality and accuracy of the information parents provide. Board certified in pediatrics, Dr. Jakum works with parents to ensure the health and well being of every child. Each day, you’ll find Dr. Jakum listening to parents, addressing their concerns, and involving them in the decision-making process for the care for their children.
Education and Training
After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Emory University School of Medicine in 1998, Dr. Jakum completed the Brown University Pediatrics Internship and Residency Program. While in medical school, Dr. Jakum also completed an elective study in international family medicine, which included a clinical rotation in the Republic of Georgia.
Honors and Awards
Among his many academic honors, Dr. Jakum received the Marshall Award—an award given for campus and community leadership—from the University of Maryland, where he graduated magna cum laude in the undergraduate physiology and neurobiology program. He also was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and has been featured as a “Top Doctor” in Washingtonian Magazine.
Some of the research Dr. Jakum has conducted includes work at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense in the divisions of Biochemical Pharmacology and Neurotoxicology.
Dr. Jakum has been in private practice at Fauquier Health with Piedmont Pediatrics since 2001. Throughout his education, professional training and career, he has been an active participant on university and hospital committees, as well as an active instructor and speaker. His teaching experience includes clinical instruction for medical students, classroom instruction for college students, and guest lecturing for community events. He also is a regular volunteer at the Fauquier Free Clinic, and is currently the chairman of the Fauquier Hospital Bioethics Committee. Dr. Jakum currently serves on the board of Fauquier Health System.
In his spare time, Dr. Jakum enjoys hiking Shenandoah National Park with his three children and coaching with the Fauquier Youth Lacrosse League. When not in his office, he can usually be found working in his vegetable garden or orchard.
